When was the last time you stopped to count your blessings? Not just the big things, but the daily mercies—breath in your lungs, strength for the day, the gift of salvation, and God’s unending love. This scripture teaches us that gratitude is not optional; it’s a way of life for every believer.
It is a timeless reminder of who God is and what He has done. It is David’s heartfelt call to his own soul, urging himself never to forget the goodness of the Lord. Sometimes life’s challenges make us forget the blessings that surround us, but verses 1–2 remind us: “Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.”
David lists the benefits of serving a loving God: He forgives our sins, heals our diseases, redeems our lives from destruction, crowns us with love and tender mercies, and fills our days with good things (vv. 3–5). These verses remind us that God is concerned about every area of our lives: our spiritual well-being, our health, our protection, and our daily needs.
Have you ever struggled with guilt or shame? Verse 12 assures us, “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” Unlike people who may remind us of our past mistakes, God wipes away completely.
Another beautiful picture here is God’s compassion as a Father: “The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him” (v. 13). Think about how a loving father cares for his children—protecting, guiding, and correcting them in love. That is how God relates to us, even in our weakness. The psalmist also reminds us that our days are short, like grass that flourishes in the morning but fades by evening (vv. 15–16). Yet in contrast, God’s love is everlasting: “But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him” (v. 17). This truth gives us peace and security no matter how uncertain life may feel.
True worship is not just about singing but also about living daily in gratitude and reverence to God. When we remember His benefits, we can face tomorrow with confidence, knowing that He who has been faithful will remain faithful forever.
Never forget the Lord’s benefits—His forgiveness, healing, redemption, compassion, and everlasting love. No matter what life looks like right now, rest in the truth that His goodness never fails.
