“For you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me.” Psalm 61:3
There are moments in life when fear grips our hearts—times when situations feel tense and overwhelming, and we are anxious that something bad might happen. In such moments, we long for safety, assurance, and a place where we can truly rest without fear.
A fortress is a strong, secure place built for protection. It is designed to shield those inside from danger, attacks, and harm. In biblical times, a fortress was a high, fortified structure where people ran to when enemies approached. It was not easily shaken, broken, or penetrated. When David described God as his fortress, he was declaring that God is his ultimate place of safety—stronger than any physical defense.
God is a fortress to all who call on Him for help. Scripture reassures us that “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to Him and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10). When we run to God in prayer and trust, we are not exposed—we are covered. Life may bring challenges, threats, and uncertainties, but when God is our refuge, we are secured beyond what our eyes can see.
Things will happen, storms will arise, and difficulties may surround us, but with God, we are never defenseless. “A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you” (Psalm 91:7). This is the confidence of a life hidden in God—protected not by luck, but by divine preservation.
The Bible also reminds us that “He who keeps you will not slumber” (Psalm 121:3). God is never tired, distracted, or unaware. While we sleep, He watches. While we worry, He works. He keeps us from evil and guards our going out and coming in, both now and forevermore (Psalm 121:7–8).
As children of God, there is grace for exemption. This does not mean we will never face danger, but it means we are preserved by God’s power even in the midst of it. He is able to keep us from common harm, unseen dangers, and unexpected trouble.
When God is with us, victory is assured. The battle may look fierce, but the outcome is already settled. Our refuge is not fragile—our fortress is the Almighty God.
Keep in mind
No matter what surrounds you, remember that God is your strong tower. Run to Him, trust in Him, and rest in the assurance that you are safe in His hands.
